Culture Open Source Forum 2017

July 6, 2017

Building a Culture of Participation

31 Aug – 2 Sep 2017, Berlin

FORUM Factory – Besselstraße 13

Organised by the Cultural Innovators Network in partnership with the Goethe-Institut

The Cultural Innovators Network believes that culture can be the key tool for social transformation. The catalyst, though, is participation. Lack of community engagement, exacerbated social divisions and disillusion, decrease of funding for culture and of involvement of grassroots initiatives in institutional decision-making, political and economic instability, are some of the common challenges that cultural organisations across the Mediterranean have been facing in the last years. Many of them have responded to these challenges in the most disruptive, creative, and innovative ways. The main goal of the Culture Open Source Forum is to celebrate this resilience and inspire new solutions, by providing a space for exchange, discussion, and collaboration between its participants, other cultural workers of the region, and the public.

60 cultural innovators from north and south of the Mediterranean, members of the Cultural Innovators Network and representatives of other outstanding participatory initiatives of the region. Each of them will bring a suitcase of experience, success stories, and challenges to tackle together, during three days of participant-driven workshops, debates, panel discussions, artistic performances.

The Cultural Innovators Network (CIN) welcomes dreamers, disruptors, explorers, or simply curious to join the Forum’s open events, the Culture Open Source Kickoff and the Cultural Night, where the public, local cultural workers, and institutions, will have the opportunity to meet the Forum’s Participants, know more about their experiences and projects, and get involved in CIN efforts to foster participation in the cultural field.

Cultural Night

Saturday, 2nd September 2017
from 6pm

The Cultural Innovators Network has developed its unique personality by using different tools to react to and provoke change, one of which is unquestionably art. And no better tool allows and encourages participation than art. That is why the Culture Open Source Forum will close with the Cultural Night, on the 2nd of September, an evening of interactive performances, exhibitions, and music that will showcase both the diversity of the Network and the ability of cross-cultural, participatory art to foster civic engagement and social transformation. During the Cultural Night, the audience will be part of participatory theatre performances, travel across various countries of the Mediterranean region through live music, learn more about culture and activism in the region through graphic journalism, photographs, short films, and end up dancing to the sound of a cross-cultural DJ set.

Follow our Facebook event page to discover the Cultural Night lineup and amazing contributors!

We are looking forward to meeting you in person and learn, exchange, and celebrate together.
